A DAY OF TERROR

The carnage wrought on September the 11th, 2001

As all of you know, September the 11th 2001 has become a day that shall be forever etched in out minds, and will go down as one of the darkest chapters in American history...indeed, the history of the entire free world. Depraved and twisted terrorists struck out against the cities of New York and Washington D.C., violently derailing the normal course of our lives.

The carnage wrought by these nameless cowards reads like the scorecard of Armageddon. The twin-towers of the World Trade Center, and much of its complex, obliterated by twin strikes of hijacked jetliners. A good section of the Pentagon was also crushed by the impact of a 3rd hijacked passenger jet. A 4th hijacked jet...perhaps bound for Washington, or perhaps camp David...crashed in rural Pennsylvania, outside of Pittsburgh. It seems as if the brave crew and passengers of that doomed flight may have resisted the terrorists, bringing the plane down in an area where the least amount of collateral damage would be done.

How many lives lost to these senseless, sickening acts? Over 260 people were lost on the 4 jets alone. Estimates for casualties at the Pentagon...an edifice with 3 times the floor space of the Empire State Building...are hovering around 190 dead. It has been estimated that around 20,000 people were in the World Trade Center at the time of the first strike. While many were evacuated, it is unknown how many managed to escape before the second strike and the subsequent collapse of the skyscrapers. What is known is that over 200 of New York City's Firefighters, EMT's, and Police Officers were lost in the collapse of the south tower. The total death toll could reach into the thousands.
